1 cup is 8 ounces, that's the same as 237 milliliters
A cup is about 8 FLUID ounces, not just 8 ounces. Fluid ounces are a measure of volume, while ounces are a measure of weight. So cups are a measure of volume as well.

In American, a cup is about 8 fluid ounces. But remember an American fluid ounce is about 29.57 milliliters while a British fluid ounce is about 28.41 milliliters. AND there is rounding sometimes.

So 1 American cup would be about 236.5 mL, but sometimes it gets rounded to 240 mL.

British Commonwealth countries (Canada, Australia, New Zealand) usually define a cup as 1 quarter of a litre, which is about 8.8 British fluid ounces, or 250 mL.

As for the UK itself, I have heard that cup measurements are not as popular there. Once source says British cups are 8 British fluid oz, or roughly 227 mL, but another source says they use the same sort of cup as used in those Commonwealth countries (250 mL). So I don't know.
