Just plain white flour. What is 'all purpose flour' referred to in American cooking recipes?

Plain flour. (as opposed to bread flour or self-rising)
Any recipe that requires self-rising will state that in the recipe.
it says all purpose on the bag -
wiki: All-purpose or plain flour
This flour is a blended wheat flour with an intermediate gluten level which is marketed as an acceptable compromise for most household baking needs.
its all purpose - im glad I dont live in your house.
I don't know
Plain.
Also might be called unbleached, white, or bleached.
Self raising flour has baking powder added, and this won't work right for recipes other than breads. Best to use all purpose flour and add the baking soda or baking powder as directed in the recipe.
Plain
It's usually referred to as 'All Purpose Flour'.
use this flour for either type of recipe
it is referred to as All Purpose flour, self rising flour is AP flour with baking powder added.
All purpose flour is COMPLETELY different from self-rising flour. You need to add soda or baking powder to all-purpose flour to make it rise----self-rising flour is great to have around because you can skip adding soda, salt or baking powder.
